care program and here we are. i think that might have nailed it a month ago. but something's changed. it could be something as definite ace bill clinton's speech. that's romney's problem and it's a big one. "the ed show" with ed schultz starts right now. >> good evening americans. welcome to "the ed show" from new york. 39 days until the 2012 election and five days until the first presidential debate. voter fraud is alive and healthy. tonight we rip the cover off the growing rnc voter suppression scandal. it's there. this is "the ed show," let's get to work. >> mitt romney and the rnc has been funneling money to an organization sponsoring voter fraud.
8:01 pm
>> i know they are counting on it. they want the option to cheat. >> senator barbara boxer to cheat and steal the election. is mitt romney's 47% remark the biggest change in politics? >> we're not going to play in missouri with todd akin, i can tell you that. so it is yet to be seen whether he stays in or not. >> reince priebus flip flops on supporting todd "s forib "forci akin. >> voters are already casting ballots and polls don't look good for republicans. now we're seeing the underhanded attempts to suppress voters and rig the game. for instance, in florida election officials have uncovered suspected voter fraud across the state. a voter registration firm
8:02 pm
working with republicans turned in forms with fake signatures and false information. republicans have cut ties with the firm and the rnc's communication director says there is nothing to see here. >> at this point we have an allegation. that mere allegation has caused to us act, act swiftly and boldly and sever our ties with this firm because we have a zero tolerance when it comes from this. the other side clearly engaged for a long time in inappropriate behavior. we don't believe it's appropriate. we wanted to make a swift and bold action to deal with that. >> hold the phone. the consulting firm was run by a long time gop operative and was paid nearly $3 million to register republicans if five swing states. michael isikoff reported on the extent the republican firm was willing to go to. >> there are reports of these irregularities growing
8:03 pm
throughout the state. as of last night we had six counties reporting irregularities in voter registration forms from this firm, including, according to paul luxe, a republican supervisor, registering of dead people. >> dead people? if you remember, registering dead people has been a republican talking point for a while. they claim it's been done by democrats. >> there are over 900 individuals who had died before the election and at least 600 of those individuals had died way outside the window that an absentee ballot could have been sent. so we know for a fact that there are deceased people whose identities are being used in elections in south carolina. >> the republican attorney general said dead voters in south carolina were a fact. but an investigation by the state election commission showed no evidence of voter fraud. the commission said its review
8:04 pm
of zombie voters did not include 696 allegedly dead voters. after the investigation the attorney general, well, he changed his tune. >> i hope -- it's my hope there are no deceased voters. but what i do hope the general assembly takes up the issue and updates archaic rules. >> voter i.d. laws specifically target people who are most likely to vote for democrats. since 2011, 34 states introduced laws requiring photo id, and 9 states passed photo id laws. it turns out the only wide spread case come from a republican group. there's also stories of outright voter intimidation taking place. the koch brother funded group

true the vote is engaging in a voter suppression effort in the state of ohio. according to the l.a. times, the names selected for purging include hundreds of college students, trailer park residents, homeless people and african-americans in counties president obama won in 2008. tonight the fox affiliate in denver, colorado is reporting the state republican party has terminated its relationship with the same voter registration firm accused of fraud down in the state of florida. it happened after this videotape surfaced of a young woman only registering voters who support mitt romney. >> i am polling people but do you vote for romney or obama? >> i thought you were registering voters a minute ago. >> i am, i am. >> and who are you registering? all voters? >> i'm actually trying to register people for a particular party because we're out here in support of romney actually.
8:06 pm
i am. >> and who is paying you for this? >> oh, the -- let me see, we're working for the county clerk's office. >> okay. you cannot come out here -- >> working for the county clerk's office. that means taxpayer dollars goes to that teen-age person to go out and register people who are going to vote for mitt romney. the fox affiliate confirmed the woman worked for the republican firm. this is what happens when republicans get their backs against the wall. they cheat. but i don't think they're going to get away with it. democrats and progressives are schooled up on the latest dirty tricks. eight years ago the republican voter fraud in florida may have gone unnoticed. today we know better. republicans can use lies and intimidation to try to win but no one is going to roll over and take it this final. 2012 just a few days away is going to be very, very interesting and i do believe
8:07 pm
that the american people are on to this. back in 2000, back in 2004 you people are nut jobs talking about voter machines and voter fraud. now it's the real deal and the tape doesn't lie. get your cell phones out. tonight's question, do you think the only way for republicans to win is to cheat? text a for yes, text b for no. can you go to our blog at ed.msnbc.com. i'm joined tonight by senator barbara boxer of california. she's written a letter to the justice department to investigate the cases of voter intimidation. senator, good to you have with us tonight. >> thank you. >> i want to start with this group true the vote. what is this group doing? what are you concerned about? >> oh, i'm very concerned. all you have to do is just read that "l.a. times" story and it will show you cases in point,
8:08 pm
for example, a woman who is recovering puerto rico breast cancer -- from breast cancer gets a letter from the county clerk saying your right to vote has been challenged because of your residence. this woman has lived in residence for seven years. an african-american family of eight gets the same kind of letter. your right to vote has been challenged because you live on an empty lot. and there is the woman sitting with her family in front of her home. and this is going on. and i just felt, even i know the obama campaign is ready to act on this but i realize that there are two important the voter rights act, passed. 630 that have criminal and civil

election." you were involved in a republican election scandal. do you believe the rnc's line about the haute. >> it's getting harder and harder to believe by every passing hour the first response was that this was a rogue employee. now we have something like nine counties. the p i think that if they really were in the dark and they oppose what's going on, they might ask for their money back. i think they should be doing that tonight. >> what's your response to i see a young lady and i'm empathetic. simply the word that she's saying, as you've stated, are illegal. i doubt she's working for the county clerk. maybe she is. i don't know. it raises a lot of questions.
8:13 pm
and it's trouble some. you think. >> apparently the firm is involved in all the seven swing states. >> could this affect an election in your opinion? >> absolutely. for instance, if you look at the florida situation, where oring in republican strong hold counties are they going to use the information to pump up turnout, by using the false voter registration? to increase romney's potential to win that state? it raises a lot of questions. >> al and raymond. impeach tho republican want to chaes because they have and candidate who's losing.

isn't over and romney still has a chance. when you listen to him like in that pennsylvania excerpt you showed today, the only way he can carry pennsylvania when you look at these polls is if voter suppression works there. if the voter suppression law is upheld by the courts, that is the only way they can win pennsylvania and that's to steal it. >> what about the first debate? it's next week. is it a must win? and what kind of candidate are we're going to see in mitt romney? he's touched other opponents. he's challenged them to a $10,000 bet. he's lost his cool, he's shouted them down. is what what's he's going to do on wednesday night? >> no, i don't think he's going to do that. the way he can win the debate is if he prepares very vigorously. i think z president ron portman, he's got to get that script,
